Come meet Loyola history professor Elliott Gorn, as he investigates the Emmett Till story using new evidence and a broadened historical context. The lynching of a 14-year-old boy in Mississippi for “whistling at a white woman” made international headlines in 1955 and it still haunts us today.
In his book, Let the People See, he dives into the crime, the trial, and the aftermath, and examines shifting American attitudes toward race since 1955. This is a timely look at the interaction between the races and the media.
Elliott Gorn, Ph.D., is the Joseph Gagliano Professor of American Urban History at Loyola University Chicago. He is the author of books about John Dillinger and Mother Jones and co-authored and edited other books on a range of subjects
